Dusk Restaurant
117-119 St Georges Road, Bristol, BS1 5UW [Map]
Dusk markets itself as an upmarket and updated steakhouse, describes itself as 'a restaurant serving steak and more.' Attracting a trendy and lively crowd the concept seems to be working pretty well so far. Whilst steak is definitely the main focus of attention on the menu, vegetarians and fish lovers won't leave disappointed.
House wine costs £11.95 per bottle, whilst mains will set you back anywhere between £11 and £27. By night, Dusk is warm and inviting with a modern, sophisticated look; by day, it's the perfect place to take time out and enjoy a Lavazza coffee or simply relax with a bottle of wine from a well selected wine list.

Market Bar and Bistro
Market Place, Somerton, TA11 7NB [Map]
Situated in Somerton, the ancient capital of Wessex, the Market Bar and Bistro, is housed in a building that dates from the 16th century and has recently been refurbished. The bar area has a very relaxed, modern atmosphere with leather sofas and coffee tables where Tapas is served. The bistro features full linen and comfortable chairs and the à la carte menu is served both at lunch time as well as the evenings.
Crowd your table with a little pie stuffed with mushrooms and smoked bacon in a garlicky cream sauce and caramelised red onion tartlet topped with grilled goat's cheese for a start. The bargains consist of crowd pleasers such as slow roast blade of lamb coated with honey and wholegrain mustard served with mashed potato and fresh vegetables and crispy belly pork with smoky chilly sauce with rice and stir fried vegetables. Among bistro specials you could try the wild rabbit dish - no taste quite like it.

Andrews on the Weir
Porlock Weir, Porlock, nr Minehead, TA24 8PB [Map]
In the sleepy port of Porlock it is possible to forget the passage of time and to shake off current worries in an atmosphere of great natural beauty and calm. Andrew's on the Weir exists to enable this to be done in more comfort and enjoyment than might otherwise be possible. At Andrew's they believe sourcing is the key so that everything that is served except the oil and the butter, it is claimed, are made on the premises. It is only slightly misleading to say that their olives come from their own Grecian olives. The fish, the flesh and the produce all comes from the area around Porlock. It is, perhaps, possible for that particular mantra to be over-exposed, though many will support the view that the more you know about what you are eating the more confident your enjoyment can be.
Amongst the starters look for the fillet of Cornish red mullet nicoise with sauce vierge, and the presse of local duck, pigeon and rabbit with pickled vegetables and red wine reduction. The fillet of local seabass on garlic olive oil potatoes, with confit fennel and bouillabaisse sauce offers an alternative to the roast saddle of Exmoor venison with savoy cabbage and bacon, spiced cranberries and red wine sauce. Puddings are well to the fore of performance and the delice of two chocolates with cherries and kirsch is something of a signature dish. A good wine list, with fair prices, is supplemented by seven house wines between £10.25 and £19.95 or £3.45 to £5.50 by the glass.

Yak Yeti Yak
12 Pierrepont Street, Bath, BA1 1LA [Map]
Yak Yeti Yak aspires to transport diners straight to the Himalayan kingdom of Nepal, with its rich culinary history renowned for its variety and delicate flavours. The décor is an eclectic mix of artefacts and paintings, so get cosy on the floor cushions with low level tables or the more conventional seating.
This Good Food Guide entrant specialises in authentic Nepalese cuisine, all freshly prepared and diners can decide the degree of spice they can handle. Steamed and fragrantly spiced pork or vegetable dumplings known as momos, are served with hemp seed chutney and this could be followed by a Kathmandu speciality of fermented bamboo shoots stir-fried with new potatoes and black-eyed peas, complete with vegetable stock.
Finish with a sweetened spiced carrot tartlet, a contemporary take on this classic Nepalese dish, or a tea ice cream. Vegetarians have a reason to rejoice as the menu is very much more than just a couple of dishes thrown around.

La Tasca - Bath
36 Broad Street, Bath, BA1 5LP [Map]
Their star player is tapas, which can be had solo or in tandem with a meal. The calamares andaluza, deep-fried squid rings, served with roasted garlic mayonnaise and lemon, is great for sharing, while the chorizo frito al vino, spicy Spanish sausage flavoured with paprika, garlic and herbs, sautéed in red wine, offers a real treat. Chicken lovers order alitas de pollo, marinated chicken wings, or have skewers of chicken breast and pepper, marinated in paprika.
Valenciana is an interesting paella that combines seafood with chicken, and if you have a taste for trivia, you may be surprised to learn that 'la paella' actually refers to the utensil in which the dish is cooked.
Other than liqueurs and beer, there are wines from Spanish vineyards and sparkling cava. All of these, especially the dry rosé wines combine well with tapas. And you would be really getting into the spirit of things if you rounded off with the crema Catalana, traditional Spanish-style vanilla custard, topped with caramelised sugar.
La Tasca Spanish Tapas Restaurants and Bars today have over sixty outlets across the UK, so it is odds on there is a branch fairly close to your home.
