In the very centre of Hindon sits the Lamb, a good example of a traditional country inn with food and drink to match, serving an appreciative local population for whom there are just enough of the little extras to make this a home away from home where one can eat without having to do a calculation first. In late 2004, it was purchased by Boisdale, whose two restaurants in London have a reputation for quality and eclectic style.
The Lamb Inn dates back to the 17th century and was originally a coaching inn. Just one mile off the A303, the hotel stands in the heart of Hindon, an attractive unspoilt Wiltshire village. Its excellent location makes it a great place to stay if you are en route to the South West. Alternatively if you want to explore the local area, Salisbury, Shaftesbury and many other places of historical interest are only a short distance away by car.
Ranald Macdonald, Managing Director of the Boisdale Group commented at the time: 'We are delighted to have acquired such a beautiful historic coaching inn. This is our first venture outside London and we are looking forward to spending much time in this stunningly beautiful part of the country. We are very aware of the responsibilities attached to running such a longstanding and much loved institution and will be careful to maintain its tradition.' As he is a man of his word, that philosophy has been stuck to ever since.
The Lamb is home to a striking restaurant with food that is sourced from local suppliers. Seldom does a menu make you want to try everything that is listed on it, but try resisting the tempting starters that could include the award-winning Dunkeld oak smoked Scottish salmon with lemon, shallots and baby capers, and Somerset pork pie with piccalilli.
While mains carry on in the same vein, with choices like local pork and herb sausages, mashed potato beer and onion gravy, and 16oz braised shank of lamb, mashed celeriac, young carrots and lamb gravy, while fish eaters and vegetarians are not forgotten.
The Lamb at Hindon has a positive warren of different bars, a private dining room and nineteen bedrooms. The oldest part of the present inn dates from the 14th century, but there was certainly an earlier building on the site since it is known that the Assizes were held there as far back as the middle of the 13th century.

Strada describes itself as 'a group of stylish, contemporary Italian restaurants, serving good quality, simple and freshly prepared dishes'. The statement sums up what this group of around seventy restaurants offers to people looking for good Italian food. The first outlet opened in Battersea in 1999 and their clientele has been increasing steadily ever since.
Though Strada has grown into a fair sized group, each outlet retains the feel of being a local neighbourhood Italian restaurant. The menu includes pastas, risottos, salads, and fish dishes, but they are best known for their quality pizzas.
They present authentic Italian dishes in contemporary surroundings and aim to use only the freshest and finest ingredients, such as Luganica sausages, Parma ham and buffalo mozzarella, imported from Italy to provide exactly the kind of rustic, traditional dishes one would expect to find travelling around its regions.
A meal could kick off with zuppa vongole e fregola, a traditional clam soup with Sardinian fregola pasta grains, wine, chilli and parsley, served with bread, or the delicious sautéed king prawns with garlic, white wine, chilli, and lemon butter served with your choice of bread.
Move on to their creamy risotto verdure, freshly grilled asparagus, broad beans, peas, spring onions, zucchini, green beans, white wine and mint, finished with baby spinach leaves. Or you could opt for the healthier, tagliolini nero granchio, black cuttlefish ink pasta with crab, courgette, red and yellow peppers, spring onion, and a hint of chilli and parsley. A real treat for the taste buds comes in the form of the bistecca manzo, a 10oz rosemary-marinated char-grilled, rib-eye steak with fries and fresh rocket.
A range of pizzas, all spun by hand, is an integral feature of each restaurant. They include the rossa, with spicy southern Italian salami, roasted red peppers, chilli, caramelised onion, garlic, fresh oregano, tomato and mozzarella. Nor are vegetarians are overlooked, and can be found tucking into dishes such as fiorentina, made of spinach cooked with garlic, nutmeg and black pepper with mozzarella, parmesan, tomato and an egg.
For those wanting to satisfy their sweet tooth, there is torroncino affogato, an iced nougat semi freddo with a shot of espresso to pour over, or a classic Italian tiramisu and, as you might expect coffee to round off the meal.
A wine list consisting of purely regional Italian wines, beers and liqueurs, all carefully chosen to complement the menu comes as no surprise and in addition, every table receives a complimentary bottle of purified water.

Part of the Whitbread family, Table Table restaurants aim to bring great value tasty pub food to an ever increasing eating-out public who like well prepared and genuine food served by friendly staff in relaxing surroundings. If that sounds too much like a dream come true be assured that at Table Table they also walk the talk, and are pleased to have the chance to prove it.
Their well located restaurants are spread across a wide range of decors and styles, and all of them share a determination to provide comfort, warmth and relaxation. Their buffet menus for special occasions are remarkable value.
In keeping with modern trends they provide dishes to nibble or share as guests consider the spread of options on a menu that could be described as British with welcome incursions. So as you share long Italian flatbread, and dough balls and dips, or a sharing platter with an imaginative range of finger food starting with garlic and breaded mushrooms, it's time to think about the relative merits of aromatic duck parcels, a prawn cocktail, breaded Camembert or sticky chicken goujons to name but a few.
Many an innocent dish from the past has been hi-jacked in the best possible sense into becoming what is now called a 'pub classic'. Wiltshire cure ham with eggs is served with chunky chips and beef, mushroom and ale pie, or chicken and chips are all familiar with British tables, be they in the dining room or the kitchen. Now they have been added to by chicken fajitas, a sweet red pepper, crème fraiche and fennel tart, a leg of duck slowly cooked and served with a Bramley apple and cider sauce, or chilli con carne with basmati rice, sour cream and guacamole and nachos. So is the humble burger with six enticing toppings.
The point is they, and others, are all here at Table Table, well prepared with quality ingredients, and presented in a way that makes you hungry even if you thought you weren't.
Getting down to the more serious side of the table keep an eye open for the seafood pie, a delightful assembly of things fishy including crayfish, red snapper, prawns and clams. Many of their steaks are 28 days matured, including a 7oz fillet. All steaks are served with watercress, roasted cherry tomatoes, a flat mushroom and chunky chips. A choice from 4 sauces adds the final touch of enjoyment.
Pastas and salads embrace some well known and loved names, but for sheer enjoyment the hot smoked salmon salad takes some beating - flakes of hot smoked salmon mixed with a house salad and soy and ginger sauce. A real winner.
Snacks aplenty cover hot baguettes with the like of grilled pork loin and Bramley apple sauce, sandwiches filled with Cheddar cheese, or prawns and Marie Rose sauce, and jacket potatoes with such temptations as chilli con carne. Add a bowl of chips for only a little extra.
A well travelled wine list offers helpful advice for the uninitiated and there's an impressive choice of draught and bottled beers and lagers. All in all it would appear that Table Table are more than achieving their aims, providing the opportunity for people to eat out enjoyably, with excellent value for money. Prezzo has been delighting diners for over eight years, and this Italian restaurant chain has since been able to expand throughout large parts of England and Scotland with some 141 outlets.
Interestingly, the company seeks to restore either impressive buildings or ones of local interest. The conversion of the Newbury library and other listed buildings, such as those in Salisbury, Romsey and Mayfair, are all welcome examples of 'new use'. Their trendy and sophisticated décor usually consists of tiled or wooden floors with delicate lights and colourful paintings, along with wooden furniture and sparkling cutlery, creating a setting that is suitable for a relaxed lunch, a family meal or an evening out with friends.
The restaurants are of particular appeal to those who like genuine Italian cuisine, and they use only the best seasonal products, many of which are imported directly from Italy. The menu includes pizza, pasta, risotto, grilled meats, fresh salads and frequently changing specials.
The freshly baked breads, like the garlic bread with mozzarella cheese, are perfect for sharing and give you adequate breathing space to order starters to follow. Crab cakes served with garlic mayonnaise or grilled goat's cheese with plum tomatoes and caramelised onions on foccacia bread with a balsamic glaze set the tone for a hearty meal. Best fun is to order an antipasto platter to share made up from seven well loved Italian nibbles.
Find pastas such as the unusual penne con salmone, with oak-roasted salmon, broccoli and fresh chillies in a red pesto and cream sauce, or firm favourites like spaghetti with meatballs, spaghetti Bolognese, and fusilli al pesto, asparagus spears with field mushrooms and roasted peppers in a basil pesto sauce.
Amongst the special pastas, the pollo mariano, seasoned chicken, pepperoni sausage, roasted peppers and fusilli in tomato sauce, is interesting and different. Italian menus would be incomplete without risotto, like tiger prawns with petits pois in a creamy saffron sauce.
Classic pizzas embrace, among a wide selection, the popular napoletana, topped with yellowfin tuna, tomato, white anchovies, capers, red onion, mozzarella and marinated olives, and the much loved quattro stagioni - pepperoni sausage, prosciutto ham, artichoke, field mushrooms, capers, marinated olives, mozzarella and tomato.
Specials could include the pollo Siciliana, char-grilled chicken breast, prosciutto ham and plum tomato slices, baked with their blend of cheese, only one example from the many tempting offerings that come out from the Prezzo kitchens.
You can accompany the food with a variety of tipples, though for many, Italian food requires Italian wines to be enjoyed to the full, ranging from house wine through Morellino di Scansano and Prosecco to liqueurs and beer, and there is espresso or fresh ground coffee to wind up an enjoyable meal, in company with a glass of grappa or sambuca.
This is Italian food at its attractive best, convincing and bringing together the traditional with the modern twist or two against a background of excellent value.

This former paper-making mill is located in an idyllic setting on the Salisbury Town Path, and on good days you can sit outside, reflect on life in general, possibly a pint of beer in particular and commune with the local waterfowl.
Their cuisine also is well-worth attention and a wide range of popular food attracts not only the locals but also many of the visitors to this notable city. A meal might start with a tartlet of wild mushrooms and thyme with whole grain mustard dressing followed by fillet of Shetland organic fed salmon with a coriander and mild ginger crust and finish with the thoroughly tempting Old Mill banana bread and butter pudding laced with whisky served with cream, ice cream or custard.

Prejudice is a terrible thing. If you had told me that one of the most attractive Indian restaurants in the south-west was to be found in the cathedral city of Salisbury, you would have found me lacking in conviction. I mean what would have Deans and Bishops past have thought of whiffs of the Orient wafting round the lanes and closes of their ecclesiastical city. In fact they might well have said, "jolly good, how soon do they open after Evensong?" and how perceptive of them to ask. For Anokaa offers serious Indian food against a background of oriental glitter, smooth service and a well-justified air of confidence.
Head Chef is Puwan Kumar, well able to respond to the Anglo-Indian craving for the best of what has been termed as The Anokaa Revolution, and a former exponent of his art at The Taj Mahal Hotel in Lucknow.
Consider starters of crab cake with ginger, basil and fennel seeds, or chicken breast pieces dusted with garlic, mint, green chilli and coriander, then lightly grilled, or a lamb rump kebab marinated with red wine and spices, then barbecued served with juicy skewed mince of lamb.
Main courses include king prawn delight, king prawns lightly barbecued then cooked in caramelised onions and cinnamon and finished in almond based saffron sauce served with lemon rice, or sea bass with garlic spiced spinach served on a bed of yoghurt sauce.
As well as wine list that would tickle the most critical clerical palate there is the customary selection of beers and soft drinks. For myself I believe that the genuine article in Indian cuisine is well worthy of the wines of another continent, or maybe even its own, notably those from the Maharashtra state.

If anybody told me that some of the best Cantonese cooking in the south of England, which I am mad about, was to be found in dear respectable, church-going Salisbury, I would have tended to raise the quizzical eyebrow. This, of course, is pure prejudice for which I should be arrested by the thought police. The next thing to note is that you should not pay too much heed to - how can I put it - the housekeeping side. It's what's on the plate that matters, the floor and the décor can take care of itself. Jo Yeung and his wife seem to have run Jade for ever, always with the same unalloyed success, and those who think beyond the end of next week must worry about what will eventually happen . . . . . . well let's leave it.
Two of the secrets of their success are so obvious that one wonders why restaurateurs ever do otherwise. Freshness of ingredients, coupled with simplicity of cooking - that's it! Since many of their dishes rely upon the sea for their origin, both are vital for success. Most of the Cantonese favourites are on parade, some with a slight twist applied with confidence against a background of the plaudits of thousands of happy customers leaving with satisfied smiles on their faces. No wonder the return rate is as high as the spire of the nearby Cathedral.
