Tandoori Nights
26 High Street, Amesbury, SP4 7DL [Map]
The experienced chefs at Tandoori Nights weave their magic to create fine dishes from the sub-continent. A lamb tikka, lamb marinated in spices and grilled in a charcoal oven, and jinga roshni, shelled king prawn chopped with garlic, coriander, spring onion, and crispy puri bread, make for a good start to an exciting meal. Main courses could follow with whole sea bass massala, marinated with light spiced yoghurt, chef's special recipe, and covered with olive oil, barbecued in the tandoor, served with a tomato base sauce accompanied with pilau rice and nan on a platter.

Restaurant at The White Hart
Ford, nr Chippenham, SN14 8RP [Map]
Dating from the 16th century, with bags of old world charm, this pleasant inn with food alongside the Bybrook River, where one may glimpse the odd passing trout, is a tranquil haven for those wanting above average pub food. There is al fresco eating on the terrace by the river when the time is right. Food, whilst it has a good modern touch, leans to the traditional dishes, and helpings are not for the faint-hearted. As well as a suitably traveled wine list, aficionados of England's traditional beers will be greatly pleased by the changing range on offer.

Jade Restaurant
109a Exeter Street, Salisbury, SP1 2SF [Map]
If anybody told me that some of the best Cantonese cooking in the south of England, which I am mad about, was to be found in dear respectable, church-going Salisbury, I would have tended to raise the quizzical eyebrow. This, of course, is pure prejudice for which I should be arrested by the thought police. The next thing to note is that you should not pay too much heed to - how can I put it - the housekeeping side. It's what's on the plate that matters, the floor and the décor can take care of itself. Jo Yeung and his wife seem to have run Jade for ever, always with the same unalloyed success, and those who think beyond the end of next week must worry about what will eventually happen . . . . . . well let's leave it.
Two of the secrets of their success are so obvious that one wonders why restaurateurs ever do otherwise. Freshness of ingredients, coupled with simplicity of cooking - that's it! Since many of their dishes rely upon the sea for their origin, both are vital for success. Most of the Cantonese favourites are on parade, some with a slight twist applied with confidence against a background of the plaudits of thousands of happy customers leaving with satisfied smiles on their faces. No wonder the return rate is as high as the spire of the nearby Cathedral.

Hox Brasserie
155 Fisherton Street, Salisbury, SP2 7RP [Map]
It would be tempting, though irrational, to think that the cathedral city of Salisbury might not have its fair selection of Indian restaurants. In fact it does but Hox Brasserie gives an entirely new slant on Indian cuisine with an emphasis on dishes from Southern India, considered by many connoisseurs to be the best, with their delicate approach to the use of spices and magnificently prepared dishes that bring a new look to the presentation of Indian food.
Hox also has the distinction of being the largest restaurant in the city, making it a natural choice for special occasions and parties, when elegance and good service are vital, with traditional and authentic threads running through the menus, under the skilled guidance of Head Chef Renga Swarmy, formerly of the Taj Group restaurant in Bangalore.
The meal could commence with spicy crab cake, fresh flaked crab with Goa spices, marinated mussels, cooked dry, with a special home style Kottayam masala. Murg malai tikka offers boneless pieces of chicken marinated in cheddar, cardamom and yoghurt roasted in a tandoor.
Amongst the main courses expect to find that wonderful old favourite, lamb rogan josh, the Lucknow version, aromatic flavoured slow cooked lamb pieces cooked in a rich red true Kashmiri-chilli and onion massala sauce with aromatic mild Kashmiri spices, saffron and red cardamom. Prawn Malai curry makes an excursion into North India with jumbo prawns, cashew puree and dried herbs, served with caramelised pulao rice, salad and naan.
South Indian cuisine is renowned for its fish dishes, a splendid example of which is the delicious yellow curry of boneless red snapper fillet in coconut, coriander and red Goan chilli paste with crunchy okra garnish.
All these dishes benefit from an accompaniment, possibly chillies and aubergine, stir fried Southern style in a roasted coconut, sesame seed, peanut and tamarind sauce, or stir fried diced mushrooms and green peas, cooked in true Punjabi style with tomatoes, onion and ginger.

Chang Thong Thai Restaurant
14 Ox Row, Market Square, Salisbury, SP1 1EU [Map]
Chang Thong Thai Restaurant provides truly authentic Thai cuisine with a wide selection to suit all tastes. Its handy location right in the centre of Salisbury makes it an ideal venue for all occasions, and its many fans finds that it caters extremely well to families. It is difficult to quote an accurate cost per head, as a set meal with beer would cost much less than £26, and many people just have a light snack at lunchtime.
