University Cafe Description

Universities seeking to expand their informal catering facilities might do well to look no further than Byres Road, Glasgow where the famed University Café has been in full swing since 1918, run by the Verrecchia family throughout. When you note that lunch averages around £5 a head without frills, is it any wonder?

Décor is of the period and such features as Formica tabletops and Art Deco panelling add a strong sense of atmosphere.

Food is of the straightforward, unfussy comfort variety and appeals to a wide spectrum of the West End's intellectual and academic population. However, as is the Scots way, ceremony is not stood upon and there is universal approval for the famed and timeless Verrecchia's award-winning ice cream

Your Reviews of University Cafe

This cafe rocks! (9 December 2008)

My mum used to take me there on holidays to Glasgow as a kid and I loved it. It was probably the highlight of the trip. We went there in the summer and it was amazing. It couldn’t be any more different to the previous writer’s experience. The food was excellent, the staff friendly and efficient, and it brought back great memories. 20/10 and a five star!

Shazzer (14 October 2008)

This cafe had long been a favourite of mine, stretching back to my childhood. It had been a few years since I had visited it, so I decided to go and eat there recently. What a disappointment it was. I ordered chips, bacon, eggs, and beans. It was practically thrown down in front of me by one of the young staff. I immediately noticed that the bacon looked very pink, and I half expected it to grunt at me from the plate. I asked the waitress to take it back and fry it a bit more. It was returned about a minute later, still pink and barely cooked. The chips tasted like reheats, and a friend who was with me, and had ordered a full breakfast complained that the sausage tasted the same way. Thinking it may be have been an off day for them, I went back again a few days later, but everything was the same. I certainly wouldn’t recommend them to anyone now, which is a great pity as it was once the best cafe around for miles.
