The 1930s neon signage is hard to miss and having stood on this North McEwan Street site since 1935, Clare Whitehouse Restaurant really is an institution in its own right. It is also a good illustration of how some things are better when they remain unchanged by the vagaries of time. Being open 24 hours a day, seven days a week is no easy business, but that's a part of its popularity that has attracted generations of Michigan motorists, guests at the opposite Dougherty Hotel looking for a less expensive meal or just about anybody who doesn't mind being seated in a diminutive dining area with plenty of food and conversations doing the rounds.

They serve classic mid-20th century American diner fare, so expect to find burgers, fries, sandwiches, omelets, some excellent breakfast and traditional dinner entrées.

This family style restaurant with just two seats and four booths packs in a unique charm that can be appreciated by those who enjoy an easy, casual vibe.
