Even if you are not acquainted with Grove Street in Jersey City, the name of this restaurant ought to give you an indication of what it was in its earlier avatar. The Merchant was a bank, and the new owners have refurbished it, keeping in mind that the industrial look it exudes gives it that edgy look which many young people are partial to, especially for lounging around for after work drinks.

Once you've settled in and it's time to order, consider a sashimi cocktail, gyoza, or naruto of tuna, salmon, yellowtail, avocado and tobiko wrapped with sliced cucumber to start. You could move on to assorted sushi; California, mango, dragon rolls, dishes such as unajyu, slices of freshwater eel over rice, or your choice of seafood, meat or vegetables cooked in tempura, teriyaki or katsu style.

Finish with ice cream accompanied by red bean, green tea, vanilla or ginger or spring roll cheese cake.

Prepared by Chef and owner Chris Siversen, the menu offers a variety of seasonally inspired dishes that are prepared in the open kitchen from organic and fresh ingredients. They include traditional dishes of rock shrimp risotto with arugula and cured lemon, and honey glazed pork belly with sweet and sour cucumber for starters. Mains include classics of rib-eye steak with parsley salad and contemporary fare such as pan roasted black cod and lobster hash or whole stuffed golden trout with spring honey, mushrooms and sorrel.

The restaurant also has a well-stocked bar that serves champagnes, and wines from around the world as well as a specially devised cocktail list created for the restaurant by Greg Seider of the Summit Bar.
