Tower Inn Cafe (Ypsilanti)
This is a very nice place - great prices, great food and always good service.
Tarry Lodge (Port Chester)
I had mixed feelings about going there again after my first dining experience at the ‘new’ Tarry Lodge. The pizza was below average as was the pasta; however, the main courses were magnificent. The senior members of staff were cold and uninviting, but the main waiting members of staff were fabulous.
Little Giant Pizza (Michigan City)
If you are at the beach or in town, call them to get the best real pizza made. It is always fresh, and delicious, and the delivery is free. They are the best pizza carryout in Northwest Indiana. Don't miss it next time you are in town. The pizza is made anyway you want it, thick, thin, pan, extra sauce, with the freshest pepperoni this side of the stock yards.
El Tapatio Cafe (Chicago)
The restaurant is very cosy, and homely with great food.
Pacific Wave (Saint Petersburg)
I was referred to this tucked away jewel of a restaurant by the concierge of a hotel. He told me this was the best restaurant in the entire Bay area, and I couldn't agree more. They fly fish in everyday from Hawaii, and I had the special that night, which happened to be mero. It was like eating lobster, but every bite melted in your mouth. The sauce was light, and had a smoky undertone that countered the creaminess. It was on top of a sculpture of Himalayan rice, again something I had never tasted, with asparagus spears. The fish itself was topped with poached Tasmanian crab. Talk about being off the chain! Anyway, the service was awesome. Right on pace but with a laid back style that made me feel I could stay there all night. I almost did, as the wine list was something I just couldn't figure in a place this size. Huge names along with some very interesting eclectic varietals that suggested someone had done their homework in putting this together. The bar looked amazing, as if every brand of everything great was right in front of my eyes. At the end of the bar was a sushi chef, which I did not expect. This after all is a truly fine establishment, but I witnessed the sushi coming out to other diners, and was amazed once again at the presentations. I listened to everyone sitting around me, and I haven't been in a restaurant in a long time where everyone was so taken with the quality of the food, and its preparation. I was told the executive chef is Puerto Rican. I can't wait to get back to St. Petersburg for another trip to Pacific Wave. I'm jealous of everyone who lives in that great city, which is saying a great deal because I live in San Francisco where we are overrun with great restaurants. Congratulations Pacific Wave. I'll be back soon.
Marcal's (Middleburg Heights)
The scampies were great, and so was everything else. They have an early bird special, which includes soup, salad, entrée, and dessert. Everyone there is so nice, and the service is good too. This was a nice place for the family, or even for just two. It was also very reasonable.
Aaron's Atop The Ala Moana (Honolulu)
Having visited Aaron's for dinner for the first time, I was initially impressed with the venue. The members of staff were attentive, though at times overly so, interrupting us a number of times, as did the young photographer who was eager for a sale. The waiter did not seem particularly knowledgeable about the menu when asked for a recommendation. I found the food to be acceptable, though mundane. The main appeal of the restaurant is the spectacular view over Waikiki, and the overall relaxed ambiance.
Walrus (Bismarck)
I have been going to the Walrus for years, but on Saturday I was treated badly by the waitress, and the manager, all because the dish we ordered was wrong. We were then given one bill, and the waitress was mad because she had to separate the bills. She then asked us not to come back.
La Bergerie (Alexandria)
I have been to La Bergerie on several occasions when visiting the Washington area from the UK. Having been to France many times myself, I was particularly impressed by the authentic French food, and the great choice of wine. The atmosphere was very welcoming, and the service was excellent. I will definitely be going back the next time I am in Alexandria.
Amer's Deli - Ann Arbor (Ann Arbor)
This colourful deli has a fantastic potato salad, and very rich ice cream. I had these during my recent visit to Ann Arbor. This place opens early, and in case I forget, I should mention that their fried egg, and toast for breakfast is very good. I would thoroughly recommend them.
