La Petite Grocery
4238 Magazine Street, New Orleans, 70115 [Map]
Culinary expectations in New Orleans have been known to lead to the unexpected, particularly due to the wide range of influences to be found there. La Petite Grocery on Magazine Street is a modern and elegant French bistro, although inspiration from the local cuisine is also present in some of the dishes. Warm and inviting décor with its creams, reds and muted lighting add to the appeal of this charming place.
The blue crab baked in brie cream, parmesan and chives is a delightful appetizer, while the Romaine hearts with shaved pecorino and creamy lemon dressing could well turn out to be a favourite among those with salad fetishes. Sauces seem to prevail in most of their main courses, and the pan roasted Berkshire pork loin with roasted shallots, parsnip puree, snap peas and cider reduction is an apt example. Wines are available either by glass or by the bottle, and their extensive list offers a multitude of choices.

Steve's Diner
201 Saint Charles Avenue, suite 210, New Orleans, 70170 [Map]
Steve's Diner has now resurfaced at their new location in Place St. Charles, but one thing remains unchanged - café-style dining minus the frills. Pop in for an energizing breakfast of buttermilk pancakes with bacon and sausage, or if you happen to be around the Central Business District stop over for a quick lunch.
As everyday is different why keep the lunch specials the same? Daily changing plates of red beans and rice, meatloaf and brown gravy, chicken fried steak, slow roasted beef brisket and fresh shrimp plate keeps boredom at bay. The quintessential noon time staple gets slightly creative - select your deli sandwich from the box and tell them how you like it dressed. For the rest it could be a rope smoked sausage, sliced and grilled, served on toasted French with Swiss, mayonnaise and Creole mustard, a catfish boat or hot roast beef po-boy.
