In 1980, Jim and Fred Parker had a hunch - to turn their beloved hobby of making authentic Texas chili mac for family and friends, into a real business. Following the hunch led to what is today one of the most favourite local hang-outs at Alexandria. Modeled after the chili parlours during the Great Depression, Hard Times Café does not provide an elegant dining experience and makes no apologies about that. Born from a real love for chili, the cafe is true to its roots and essence and offers the best chili mac in town. As the name blatantly suggests, the prices are cheap and therefore a steal considering the quality of the food.

The grilled wings with Texas hot sauce, chilli lime and honey BBQ is a must-have apart from the chilli mac of course, which is the reason for the cafe's existence. There are char-grilled burgers, chilli nachos and succulent BBQ ribs apart from a host of other equally lip-smacking inventions that you might just order for take-out. Highly recommended.
