Valparaiso Restaurant Description
It seems extraordinary that twenty years on Liverpool still has only one Chilean restaurant. Julio Arellano, the Chilean owner, is a man who takes no prisoners and the chorizo and tortilla are his own make. His links with his homeland are strong and there are a number of places and institutions in Chile which daily benefit from his philanthropy.
Closer to Liverpool the customers of Valparaiso benefit from his expertise amidst the stoves, where seafood in some form is a primary dish. Starters may include the excellent house fish soup, fresh mussels and smoked duck-breasts that have benefited from corn feeding.
Main courses are challenging and exciting with minced beef topped by sweetcorn, paella Valparaiso made with saffron rice and seafood and shredded beef in a tortilla wrap as lead favourites. There is also a good vegetarian selection.
In a country where men are men, puddings are no big deal, but there is a selection for those who have space left in the tanks after fuelling up on Julio's spicier offerings. The respect occasioned by Chilean wines demonstrates itself in the list. All told it comes as little surprise that Valparaiso continues to bring comfort and pleasure to the appetites of Liverpool - and well beyond.

I went to Valparaiso to celebrate my graduation and was extremely disappointed. The staff seemed to be struggling, as the owner was away. Surely a restaurant should be able to survive one night without the owner. Anyway, to cut a long story short, the food took ages to arrive. We waited twenty-five minutes for our drinks, and over an hour for our food. Most of the fish options had been removed. When the food finally arrived, just as we were standing up to leave, it was such a disappointment. The duck and chicken were overdone, and dry. The beef stew, which is meant to be cooked slowly to enhance the flavour and texture of the meat, was particularly flavourless. Chilean food is delicious, but this was very sad food. We were offered no apology or explanation, except for the owner’s absence. Eating here is not cheap either. Did I also mention we had to listen to reggae music throughout dinner?

I first ate at Valparaiso when I visited Liverpool in the early 90s and I have visited there whenever possible since. The food is always very good and the portions large. People I have entertained have been ecstatic and my friend's son who was reluctant to 'go with the oldies' enjoyed himself so much he didn't want to go back!
It's good food at a good price - unobtrusive, and attentive. You must go there.
