Valvona & Crolla Caffe Bar

19 Elm Row, Edinburgh, EH7 4AA

V & C is a real trap! You pop into the cafe for an innocent sandwich or some salami and some of their daily baked bread and before you can say mama mia you're in the shop spending money you never thought you had. The café does a very good line in light snacks and other aspects of Italian cooking as the aforesaid Mama used to do it. Don't look for anything over-exotic, good wholesome simple cooking, think pumpkin tortellini and Italian spicy sausage pizza. Wine is not a problem, they just sell you what you want and add a notional corkage onto the price. The whole atmosphere is pretty buzzy, it's handy for the Playhouse and theatre suppers can be such a success that if it's pre- be sure you remember to turn up for the play.

REVIEWS OF Valvona & Crolla Caffe Bar

B. Fallon (15 September 2008)

As lovers of all things Italian and having had nothing but glowing recommendations for Valvona and Crolla, we made the pilgrimage to their deli in Elm Row on a recent trip to Edinburgh. The deli is on a very busy road in a rather seedy part of town. This is a very nice deli but in no way exceptional. It may be Scotland's finest but there are plenty of better ones in England and most are a lot less expensive. In the cafe at the rear of the premises, service was very slow and disorganised and prices are high. The following day we dropped into their Vincaffe near Harvey Nicks, for lunch. The restaurant is on the first floor and is a soulless space that closely resembles a 1980's office interior. From a very small menu, we chose the least expensive and simplest thing - a pizza. How could we go wrong? These were the worst pizza's we have ever had anywhere and tasted of nothing but garlic, in case you are wondering, no, we did not order garlic pizzas. The simple salad could have done with a wash as it was full of grit. Wines by the glass start at £5.75 and rockets up to £12.95. On this evidence I think Valvona and Crolla are over hyped and over priced.

My partner and I were booked for a show at the fringe so I thought I would take her for a nice lunch at one of the oldest established Italian deli restaurants in Edinburgh, having heard about it a few times over the years, but what a disappointment and total rip off. It’s not cheap as far as lunches go but obviously becoming complacent and assuming their reputation will allow them to get away with anything. A starter of crostini arrived with four slices of cold, inexpensive baguette with some kind of tasteless chick pea mixture on one, half an inch slice of tomato on the other and some mozzarella which thankfully was the real thing, three small slices of what looked and tasted like low-cost pepperoni and the smallest sliver of ‘cooked to death’ tuna topped off with half dead rocket salad, which was unpicked of the heavy stalk and devoid of any form of dressing. I could go on but it would take so long that I may miss lunch at another place where the serve the best pizza.
