Velvet Description
Sometimes described as the best part of Canal Street, though not without stiff opposition, this well-established Gay bar and snackery is renowned for a number of things, most importantly from our point of view the fact that the light meals and snacks are of good quality and variety. You may also be intrigued by the fact that there is a fish tank built into the floor and that should you wish for some in-motion entertainment the QVC shopping channel is piped in to the loos. Just thought you'd like to know.

I went for a date at Velvet last Monday. The first impression for me was sexy and glam. The reception lead us to the table under the staircase, but we wanted to sit somewhere quieter, so we choose the table in the corner. The restaurant ambience is calm, friendly and not pretentious. The menu has a good variety of choice. From pure and simple such as rib eye steak to adventurous Asian fusion fried chicken with wasabi potato mash. I ordered mussels for starter and a medium-rare rib eye steak serve with black pepper sauce for main course. The steak was cooked perfectly, juicy and flavoursome. The chips on the side were crispy and not greasy at all. If you ordered your food between 4-7pm, a two-course meal is £11.95, which is bargain. Normally, there are £4-7 for starter and £10-15 for main course. The service is fairly good, except the receptionist shouldn't really have taken us to the table under the stairs.

I've been to Velvet several times over the last five years. I've always found the food to be excellent. The location is superb! The decor is beautiful! However on every occasion the staff are unfriendly, unhelpful and sometimes rude. My last visit - had to ask for menus after 15 minutes, ask to order, wasn't offered more drinks, wasn't asked if everything was ok! Not one smile, please or thank you. A lovely restaurant if you don't mind awful service!
