Vennell's Restaurant
7 Silver Street, Masham, HG4 4DX
A delightful find in this small market town, offering good quality cooking using quality ingredients in relaxing, elegant surroundings. Chicken and ham terrine, studded with wild mushrooms, spiced raisins or risotto of smoked haddock and peas, parmesan foam to begin with sort of sets the scene, supported by pan fried wild sea bass, aubergine confit, truffle gnocchi, dried tomatoes or roasted Gressingham duck, cabbage, liver mousse, potato confit. Desserts come in for the same treatment and a well-kept Yorkshire cheese board, a selection of five, with chutney, biscuits and bread is what you might expect in the home of Wensleydale.English, French, Modern British

REVIEWS OF Vennell's Restaurant
Rodney M (3 March 2010)
Booked a table based largely on the website and the good value fixed price menu. Bit surprised to then find that the identical (and short) menu in the restaurant itself had supplements on a few items, meaning fixed price was actually a starting point.
Also, one of our group only wanted 2 courses, not the the 3 courses on the fixed menu - but we were billed for the 3 courses, even when we queried it. Waitress should really have made this it clear at the time of ordering. Can't fault the food - very good, and good list of reasonably priced wine, but more clarity on what 'fixed' price menu means would be good, especially being in Yorkshire!

I always enjoy a meal at Vennell's. I live in North Yorkshire and enjoy eating in cramped snugs, dark oak bars, draughty castles and chintzy tea-rooms. Vennell's is more airy, spacious and has a more metropolitan feel than other places and that’s a welcome change. When I say 'spacious' I'm referring to the generously spaced tables and the unhurried service. The courses arrive at a sensible speed, which tells you that there’s probably just one person doing the cooking, and there's no sense of being rushed along - plenty of time to digest and enjoy. The food is fresh, locally sourced and tasty. I wish they don’t play music.
