Verandah Restaurant, The Description
What have Sir Cliff Richard, Clint Eastwood and Imran Khan got in common? The answer is that they all eat at The Verandah when they visit Edinburgh.
Right from the start, by rejecting red flock wallpaper and hot curries for a popular blend of tropical timber blinds and fine delicate dishes The Verandah broke with the conventional view of what made an Indian restaurant. This cool attractive atmosphere is personified in its proprietor, Dr. Wali Tasar Uddin, MBE, JP. After coming to this country from Bangladesh, Wali has not been long in fully integrating himself in the life of his newly adopted home.
The Verandah has been awarded every major honour that a restaurant can receive, such as "Best Indian Restaurant" by Scottish Good Food Guide, "Restaurant of The Year" by M8, "Best In Britain" by National Restaurant Directory, "Best In Scotland" by Good Curry Guide, Les Routiers "Casserole Award" twelve years in a row, Listed in Britain's Top Indian Restaurants By The Good Curry Guide and has continually received accolades from restaurant critics and other guide books.
However, The Verandah remains reassuringly low key. The intimacy of the service is never lost neither is the attention to detail, be it the fresh flowers on the table or the final hint of seasoning for a specially cooked dish. "We always remember that our customers are our most valued asset" says Wali "And no amount of awards can shift our attention from providing the best Bangladeshi experience that we can".

Usually, we are not overly partial to starters, but Verandah’s king prawn puree is sui generis, one of a kind. Made from large prawns, fresh coriander etc, it makes a fine beginning to a meal. Make sure, you don't miss this yummy starter. Two fairly common vegetable curries vegetables karai and mutter paneer turned out to be tasty delights at Verandah. Unlike most Indian restaurants, vegetable karai doesn’t arrive swimming in a pool of oil. It was well seasoned with a medley of Indian spices as was the mutter paneer. We enjoyed these two vegetable curries with some flavourful pieces of garlic naan as well as rice. On the meat side, tandoori chicken and lamb pista pasanda demonstrated the chef's talents yet again. One bite into a chunk of tender tandoori chicken was enough to give us a glimpse of nirvana. Although a little mildly spiced for our taste buds, the lamb pista pasanda gave no room for complaint. The service was friendly and polite and the atmosphere in the restaurant was the same. All in all, our meal at the Verandah was a delightful experience.

Verandah is a smart and stylish passage to India, which serves traditional Asian cuisine within contemporary surroundings complete with linen clad tables, fresh flowers and modern wood interiors. The food and service deserved ten out of ten.
