Victory, The
Warninglid Road, Staplefield, nr Haywards Heath, RH17 6EU
Apparently, during the 19th century it was difficult for the owners of this inn to gain a license, so, after a prolonged legal battle with the locals, when they finally managed it in 1848 - they aptly named it The Victory Inn. The name also holds a resonance for the cricket team and its supporters as matches are played on the green, which The Victory overlooks. The starters there tick all the boxes from onion bhaji and vegetable samosa served on a curry sauce with poppadoms, to fresh anchovies marinated in olive oil and vinegar and served with crackers. The menu wanders through familiar dishes like fish pie, fresh fillets of salmon, cod and prawns in a white wine sauce topped with cheddar mash and red Thai chicken curry, breast of chicken cooked in Thai spices with coconut milk, served with fragrant rice, for the main course.Apparently, during the 19th century it was difficult for the owners of this inn to gain a license, so, after a prolonged legal battle with the locals, when they finally managed it in 1848 - they aptly named it The Victory Inn. The house speciality of steak and kidney pudding is a crowd pleaser.

REVIEWS OF Victory, The
Nigel Cook (28 October 2009)
We've always enjoyed the excellent food there - how good must it be to go twice in a day as we did one day last month! Seafood is a particular speciality - the skate and monkfish are the best I've had in England - perfectly prepared and presented. I recommend anyone to try it and you wont be disappointed.
Steve Jones (13 March 2007)
The Victory and Staplefield offers good ale, fine wine and above average pub fare. The menu offers a choice of quality dishes and the specials board is updated daily. I have tried the old favourites on the menu but mostly enjoy the variety of seafood on offer. Such is the popularity it is now necessary to book a table at weekends.
