Village Bistro, The Description
There's a warm and cosy feel to The Village Bistro, an inviting little French styled restaurant tucked away in Charles Street, Hoole. Friendly and intimate, this is a great place for a quiet dinner or an Express lunch where you could choose from the two or three course meals from a set menu. Despite its compact size, the venue offers forty covers across two floors and you wouldn't be surprised to see that most of them are taken.
Starters might include a rabbit and winter vegetable lasagne with whole grain mustard cream, and for main course you could expect a pot roasted pork belly with mash and red wine jus while a grilled rib eye steak comes to the table with fat chips, tomatoes and mushrooms. Sweet endings such as baked vanilla cheesecake with prune and Armagnac compote make everything worthwhile and a there's a good selection of fine wines, beers and spirits that complements the food remarkably well.
Fixed Dinner
- £9.95 (3 courses), Mon - Fri, 6 - 7pm
Your Reviews of Village Bistro, The
Colin E Eyre (15 July 2009)
We were staying in the adjacent street on the outskirts of Chester and called in without booking for the early evening special. This meant that the two of us were alone in the upper room. Nevertheless we received excellent service from friendly and helpful staff who did not fuss around unnecessarily.
We both had broccoli and potato soup with Brie. This was delicious but could have been warmer. For the main course I had mackerel and my partner a bacon chop. Both were cooked to perfection and beautifully presented. For pudding my partner could manage only ice cream, which was first rate; I had a scrumptious pavlova. All this for less than ten quid each. When we ordered two 250 ml glasses of wine we were offered a 500ml carafe, thus saving us a pound.
Our only complaint about the Village Bistro is that it is in Chester and not Canterbury where we live. As a tourist city Canterbury is overrun with eateries but there is nothing approaching this for charm and good value. Charles Street is worth a visit on its own for its wonderful array of independent shops. Well done VB and everybody.
