Vineyard at Stockcross, The Description
The Vineyard, upgraded to four AA Rosettes in 2003 continues to delight not only its loyal following but many who pass through, retaining the best of memories, perhaps to return at some future date. The owner is Sir Peter Michael, and he describes the Vineyard as a restaurant with room to stay. Great attention is paid to detail and given Sir Peter's vineyard in California it is not surprising that there are good American influences at work in such matters as staffing and indeed wine. The highly prized list of Californian wines is the speciality of the house, but it does not eclipse the vast number of offerings from around the world, which include some 60 or so under £20, down to £12.
Turning to the food a risotto of smoked haddock with mustand sherbert sets the tone for subtlety of flavour. Sheer inspiration shows through in the salmon 'mi cuit' accompanied by a smoked eel macaroni with pickled cucumber, a wonderful blend of material and texture. Quite how our American cousins react to a warm chocolate fondant with parsnip ice cream and wafer is a matter of conjecture probably only known to Sir Peter, but I would trust anything here. A place that makes its own black pudding has to be special.
It is a pleasure to visit somewhere like The Vineyard even if only to demonstrate how things should and can be done.

I decided to take my wife there after reading a review about this hotel. They described it as the best meal of your life, which sounded too good to be true, so I put them to the test. All I can say is wow! They didn't disappoint in the slightest. The hotel itself is smaller than I anticipated but is exceptionally well presented and the members of staff really know their stuff. We were made very welcome and had a fantastic evening making our way through the tasting menu - not inexpensive but worth every penny.

The Vineyard was recommended by a colleague as somewhere special. I decided to take my husband for his birthday. What a fantastic experience that was! The welcome, the knowledge of the menu and the wines were outstanding. The food and service was first class and being able to relax and enjoy the beautiful surrounding when having our after dinner drinks and chocolate was the icing on the cake.
