Waggoners, The Description
Tucked away in Ayot Green, amidst the pristine countryside near Welwyn, well loaded with beautiful English cottages, is a classy French restaurant rooted in rich history. A refurbished 17th century coaching inn, The Waggoners is now run by veterans in the field of hospitality, Aude and Laurent Brydniak. Warm earthen hues create a welcoming, cosy ambience while contemporary accents in the decor, introduce a sophisticated French appeal. Friendly staff guide customers to their table where they are presented with an impressive menu of innovative dishes.
While the cuisine is authentic French, there are ample overtones of influences from all over the world, making each dish original and inventive. Escargots beurre a l'ail - slowly cooked snails and garlic butter in their own shells for starters, and the cuisse de lapin braise à la moutarde - braised rabbit leg served with noodles, baby onions and pancetta for the main course, do justice to the dining experience. The wines are mostly French, but a fair share of new world wines make for an extensive wine list. The experience is pleasant, enjoyable and recommended.

I visited Waggoners as part of a very brief trip to the area - what a fantastic little find! We were pushed for time and the waitress Moira made sure that everything was prompt and efficient for us. I had the chicken chasseur with a glass of Sauvignon - absolutely delicious, I eat out a lot but this was special. I especially adored Moira, she's a real asset to the place. I'm looking forward to going again when I'm next in the area.

I had the pleasure of eating at The Waggoners while visiting Welwyn Garden City. I was recommended by a local who had eaten there since the change of management. Clear directions sent me to a 'gem' hidden within Ayots Green. A very warm welcome and a lovely table led me to the á la carte menu, which was varied, interesting and a pleasure to read. I started with a crab meat pancake which I found to be light in texture and left me enough room for my red mullet fillets. Both starters and mains were superb and a joy to eat. For my dessert I decided to go back to healthy and ordered the pineapple carpaccio which was delicious as well as refreshing. The wine list was excellent and though mainly French there are plenty of New World wines and the chance to return to a wine tasting evening held every month. I was introduced to Laurent the new owner who I complimented on the food and service, both were excellent and I shall return.
