Wahaca - Covent Garden Description

A first venture by Thomasina Miers, former MasterChef winner, this exciting new restaurant takes its style from a Mexican food market, which as I know only too well can be a challenging experience. A lady with a social conscience, Thomasina has seen to it that the interiors are largely constructed from recycled materials, and that ingredients are locally sourced wherever possible.

What she is most importantly doing is debunking the notion that Mexican food is all about fiery food that rips your throat out, washed down with equally ferocious brews that make tequila seem like lemonade.

Mexican street food is heavily invoked in this process. Quesadillas are presented as toasted flour tortillas oozing with melted cheese and one of four fillings that includes smoky black beans. A tostada of two light, crisp tortillas, can be piled high with chicken tinga, shredded, marinated chicken with chipotle chillies.

The Wahaca selection for two people offers two each of smoky aubergine and goat's cheese quesadillas, chorizo quesadillas, fish pastor tacos, steak and chicken tacos, spicy slaw, with salsa, guacamole and totopos.

Wahaca is a positive Aladdin's cave of culinary delight - I really think you could eat there every day of the year and never walk away bored. Warmly recommended. Please note that Wahaca does not take reservations.

Your Reviews of Wahaca - Covent Garden

SS (29 March 2009)

I didn't know anything about Wahaca before I went last night, but I had a thoroughly great night! We only had to wait half an hour for a table of 14 and on a Saturday night. The staff were really helpful and the food was reasonably priced and tasted great. We ate the ‘street food’ and all shared which made it a very sociable meal. I would definitely return.

Vladi (10 March 2009)

I have been in Wahaca this weekend and I love the place. It's full and noisy as a market place should be. The members of staff are cheerful and very helpful. They even told me that what I have ordered, not knowing the food, was too much for one person, which I found very nice. The place is crowded but you don't mind because of the atmosphere. I do not know how they managed to make their beef steak so yummy. Prices are very good, considering they are in central London. I hope this will not change over time. The only downside for me was the club music they played most of the time while we were there. PS: Try the tequila with the shot of spicy tomato juice - it's great.
