Walnut Tree Inn Description
Fairly recent changes at this distinguished restaurant appear to be all for the best, and former owner Franco Taruschio's achievements are still in safe hands.
Having suffered a rather rocky time for some years, it is a relief that finally the combination of Shaun Hill, the multi-award winning chef, author and former owner of The Merchant House in Ludlow, once rated as the fourteenth best restaurant in the world, and William Griffiths have restored credibility to it.
William, with his wife Charlotte, runs The Angel Hotel in nearby Abergavenny, but some years back he used to work with Shaun; their joint mission is to restore a much loved restaurant to its former glory. The food style will be very different but the objectives will be the same, good food and wine at acceptable prices.

I visited The Walnut Tree and was very impressed. I have recently dined at local restaurants but the Walnut Tree was far superior. The service was excellent and the food was magnificent. I had scallop tartare with scallop won ton fritters to start, followed by wild duck with morel mushrooms and game gravy and bakewell tart with vanilla ice cream for dessert. The quality of the produce and the presentation were exceptional. The food was cooked to perfection and the service was refreshingly efficient. The whole experience was enjoyable and the prices are acceptable too. I cannot wait to return.

A party of three, we visited the Walnut Tree just two days after it’s reopening in Dec 2007. This was an exceptional meal by any standards. Items on the menu were unusual and perfectly prepared, especially the sweetbreads. It is not the cheapest eatery around, but we all felt that we had excellent value in pleasant and relaxed surroundings. The refurbishment has improved the dining area a lot, making it far more airy and comfortable than before.
