Another good example of a pub, which has taken itself in hand and now offers food every bit as good as many a restaurant though, it has to be said, at prices, which are certainly comparable. In achieving this the pub appears to have lost little of its essential character.

The dining room, which is serviced by co-owner Sarah Jeffery and Toby Greensides, offers friendly service and takes its menus from a wide interpretation of modern British cooking. Amongst the starters may be found smoked and fresh salmon rosti cake with ginger and lime and chilli dipping sauce. For those who like their fish with a touch of zest the spiced monkfish with a cream sauce that has been briefly introduced to the curry jar must appeal. To complete, the vanilla cheesecake with well-soaked morello cherries makes a flavoursome finale to the meal.

A wine list with real character offers plenty of choice within a reasonable price range, from £10.95. Five wines by the glass are also available from £2.75 to £3.75.
