West Beach Bar & Restaurant Description

The horrors of eating at the British seaside are too well catalogued to be ignored. So it is with profound relief that we are able to record exceptions to the rule, of which West Beach is without doubt one. Only a short distance from the pier it is located in a bright, large cheerful room that immediately inspires confidence and optimism; with outside seating when the weather is being kind.

An ideal family place the menu is geared towards all ages and good food is presented so well that it tends to take precedence over what children naturally go for. But everything is beautifully prepared, looks thoroughly wholesome and is incredibly good value. As one would expect the fruits of the sea feature largely on the menu, and there is never any doubt about its provenance.

Opening for breakfast each day from nine to eleven, the main act starts at midday. You can opt for a light lunch, with choices like salmon fishcakes, cod and chips, fish soup or moules marinières, with slightly more mundane offerings like burgers or baguettes, but besides the a la carte they also have an extremely reasonably priced 'menu du jour', this is served, at a higher price, in the evening as well.

Your Reviews of West Beach Bar & Restaurant

Brian (21 February 2009)

We went there for Saturday lunch, glorious day and a great spot to eat. We have been there several times and thoroughly enjoy it. Fish finger sandwiches are outstanding as ever, and I had half lobster, which was gorgeous. The service was not bad, they were slow to get the first drink and the bill at the end, but in between from getting food ordered it was good. One downside, they do not do Chardonnay by the glass, every other variety and blend of white grapes is available, but if you want a glass of Chard you have to buy a bottle. They should sort this, it’s not hard.

I used this restaurant recently to entertain some business colleagues - and whilst the fish was incredibly fresh and very nice, the shellfish was distinctly tired. Service was slow but the biggest insult was that although the meal prices were marked on the specials board - they failed to mention that you would be charged 50p for a garnish. Please remember that vegetables are an extra £3.50 per spoonful per variety. Do they want customers to come back? If you don't mind paying substantially higher prices - it does have a fantastic sea view - then it is for you - but personally I will not be going back.
