White House

Affcot, Church Stretton, SY6 6RL

A former 17th century blacksmiths shop in the heart of the Shropshire countryside is the setting for this cosy family-run restaurant owned by Raymond and Sarah Hall. In its former avatar, the refuge served horse drawn travellers along the busy A49 Shrewsbury to Ludlow Road. Today, it is counted among the area's most respected dining venues. The ambience is warm and friendly, and you could sit either in the restaurant or the garden that offer views over the Shropshire Hills and the Ragleth. Don't be alarmed if you come across Sid, the White House's friendly Jack Russell who appears on late evenings and special occasions to check things out. Lovingly created homemade British dishes ranging from a warm salad of shredded duck, chorizo sausage and marinated figs with Long Mynd heather honey and soy dressing, and roast fillet of lamb Shrewsbury with a pine nut and rosemary crust and redcurrant and port sauce are delivered by friendly and attentive staff.

REVIEWS OF White House

Just fantastic! Fantastic food, service and price - I cannot recommend this restaurant high enough. You only usually find this class of restaurant in France. If you haven't tried it you are missing a treat.

Tracey Swain (2 March 2009)

I have eaten at this restaurant three times now and I cannot state highly enough how wonderful everything is about the place. I moved here from London-Kent last year and one of my hobbies whilst in the South East was eating at fine restaurants those within my budget of course. I am utterly delighted to find a restaurant on my doorstep that not only equals some of the wonderful places I visited in London but betters them. The attention to detail is amazing I have never in all my years seen lead cut crystal used in a pub not even the private clubs I belonged would serve me my rum and coke this way. The food is to die for and Gareth Blackstock would kill to own an establishment such as this. Wonderful dishes lovingly prepared and served hot at their peak to your table in surroundings that are clean comfortable and of a particularly high standard. The little touches make all the difference and I intend to keep going back as my budget allows to sample everything on the menu. I particularly want to try the starters and desserts night, what a great idea, if I actually manage to eat all, it will be a miracle. The members of staff are brilliant, friendly, helpful and happy to serve you, which I have found in this day and age hard work to find in most places. Customer service is at its peak here and many supposedly better establishments would do well to take a leaf out of the White House’s book. If you do nothing else when you visit Shropshire you must try this restaurant. Trust me its well worth it.
