White Vine House, The
24 High Street , Rye , TN31 7JF
White Vine House is situated in historical centre of the Ancient Town of Rye and dates from 1560. The building, which has seven letting rooms including a four-poster, has been lovingly refurbished. In particular its distinguished Elizabethan panelling now helps to create a unique combination of a fabulous atmosphere with the delights of their food. The menu is modern brasserie in style and changes every two months or so. Starters could include marinated herrings with a glass of chilled vodka, Parma ham and shaved pecorino, Welsh rarebit and Normandy mussels. Mains include rib-eye steak with Cornish blue sauce and chunky chips, smoked haddock with poached egg and grainy mash, wild mushroom and parmesan risotto and Genovese lasagne.White Vine House is situated in historical centre of the Ancient Town of Rye and dates from 1560. There is always a fish of the day such as pan fried mackerel with pepper and mango salsa and mustard cream sauce.
Make sure though that you leave room for their delicious, but rather calorific, puddings such as apple and cinnamon crumble and cream; treacle and walnut tart or ginger and almond bake with vanilla ice-cream.

REVIEWS OF White Vine House, The
M. Hospel (10 May 2006)
White Vine House has recently gone through an extensive programme of refurbishment and has now firmly established itself as one of the top destination for lunch or dinner in Rye and the surrounding area. The menu changes regularly but always hits the spot with its carefully prepared bistro style dishes.
I particularly enjoyed the Normandy mussels, the lamb shank and the steak and mushroom pie. Everything is homemade on the premises, ingredients are sourced locally whenever possible (the superb fish from a local supplier is worth a special mention) and the place exudes care and attention. Note the fabulous wine list with something for everyone's taste (and pocket). The service is always personable and attentive.
I love the opulent dining rooms and "club room" with authentic 16th century wood panelling and luscious chandeliers, yet the place feels modern at the same time with its designer high back leather chairs, a few well chosen antiques and modern paintings. This is a family-run business to come back to time and again. In fact, there are 6 individually designed rooms (including one with a four poster bed!) so maybe next time I'll sample the wine list the way it deserves to be sampled and just head upstairs... Recommended!
