The Kentish town of Whitstable is best known for offshore harvesting of oysters and Whitstable Oyster Fishery Company is one of Europe's oldest commercial ventures to have exported oysters across the Roman Empire during their occupation of Britain. Its attractive location in the Royal Native Oyster Stores, a singularly appealing weather-worn down building on the seafront - has a pleasant interior split into a bar, the Dredgermans court and the well renowned Fish Restaurant.

It comes as no surprise that most dishes have a pan-fried squid, oysters or whiting well to the fore. That apart you could expect the likes of four char-grilled razor clams with garlic and butter and whole roast local sea bass with rosemary, to feature on the menu.

Close with, perhaps, a white chocolate cheesecake with raspberry coulis or a sticky toffee pudding with pecan sauce.
