Who'd a Thought It
Headcorn Road, Grafty Green, nr Lenham, ME17 2AR
Built in the reign of Henry VIII the Who'd a thought it has a colourful history involving smugglers, His Majesty's Dragoons and more recently those who like a particular trend in food. The menu is filled with examples of mainly the more refined products of the sea, starting with smoked salmon and poached egg en brioche, finished with asparagus tips and caviar and progressing through ravioli and quail morels with a Madeira jus, to Grade A oysters from the Colchester Oyster Company, and finishing with superior caviar served traditionally with chive, sour cream, hard boiled egg and toast. Understandably this cornucopia is well supported by fine champagne, starting with Krug at £95 a bottle down to the more humble brands at £22.Built in the reign of Henry VIII the Who'd a thought it has a colourful history involving smugglers, His Majesty's Dragoons and more recently those who like a particular trend in food. How refreshing to find somewhere of this bent in our democratic age, an outpost of luxury and indulgence with style.

REVIEWS OF Who'd a Thought It
Alison (8 September 2008)
Well 'Who'd a thought it', that you would pay £160 for a lodge room and be so disappointed. My partner and I stayed there on Saturday. Room 7 is the pits - hideous decor in the small room, the bathroom and Jacuzzi was dirty. Both sets of taps on the twin sinks were broken, the shower door fell off whilst my partner was in there. Heaven forbid if you need to go to the toilet because you only get half a roll. And hope you don't want to watch TV, because that doesn't work either, unless you only want to watch BBC1. There was no milk in room and had to go to main pub in morning to ask for some, was grunted at by the chef, who was very rude. Breakfast is a joke, when paying £160 for a room you expect a full cooked breakfast. What you really get is a roll wrapped in cling film, an apple and an orange and two Nutri Grains, I wasn't aware that this now passes as a continental breakfast. When we complained to the arrogant manager, he never apologised and was only prepared to take £40 off the bill - very disappointed. For an extra £50 we could have had a fantastic room elsewhere.

This place used to be very good, but is now a complete mess. The service is disappointing, food is not upto the mark and the manager is unresponsive.
