Wig & Mitre - Lincoln

Food wise, we can't complain about the Wig and Mitre. It is well presented and tasty and there is a good selection to choose from without being too much. On our last visit we had pork and cod, both were cooked to perfection.

The only complaint is that it lacks atmosphere. It feels like you're sat in the front room of someone you don't know very well with the only sounds either coming from other diners or the clattering of tableware. It makes for quite awkward eating and the furniture only contributes to that.

We have eaten at the Wig and Mitre twice before and were delighted with the standard of food and pleasantly relaxed atmosphere on both occasions. It was disappointing therefore, after recommending the Wig to our guests, to be presented with a meal that I can only describe as elegantly presented mediocrity.

Whilst attractively arranged upon the plate, all the dishes were decidedly bland and lacking in flavour - a few herbs or a bit of garlic here and there really wouldn't go amiss. We also thought that the wine was very over-priced with more than a 50% mark-up on most bottles.

And finally, although this is a fairly minor point, the menu says that hand-made fudge is served with the coffee but the fudge on this occasion, was replaced with mint imperials - not quite the same thing! With such strong competition from Browns Pie shop next door and The Old Bakery nearby, the management at The Wig and Mitre really need to check out the opposition and up the stakes a bit rather than relying on former reputation.
