Windmill, The Description
Only a mile from magnificent Belvoir Castle, The Windmill was the subject of a refurbishment in 2006 that has transformed this old country inn, but instead of tearing the heart out of the place as sometimes happens, this one has been handled with skill and taste. The essential nature remains and the overall effect is one of added welcome and roused expectations.
Menus are regularly changed, and are reassuringly lacking in length whilst offering a range of dishes than cannot fail to please. Drawing wherever possible on local produce and ingredients they can include pheasant, partridge and pigeon from the Belvoir Estate, also renowned for its splendid cordial pressés, on sale in the bar.
Because of the changing menus we list here dishes that make regular appearances, though proprietors David and Kirsten are always on the lookout for new and interesting additions to their repertoire. Starters of Belvoir pigeon and black pudding salad are always popular, pan fried prawns with chilli and lime introduce a Mediterranean note into rural Leicestershire, and duck and port pate is served with red onion chutney for added piquancy.
Main courses can include steak and ale pie, fresh fillet of an Australian meaty fish called barramundi with chilli and lime butter, or their famous combo of beef, chicken and pork, with meat supplied by the very credible Alan Day Butchers from nearby Bourne.
A two course menu chosen from the main menu is available Monday to Friday, except Friday evenings, to include a choice of dessert, perhaps fresh strawberries and cream or treacle tart and custard. This is Colston Bassett country so expect to find Stilton cheese in top notch condition.
The Slate Menu, ten or so snacks that are available most of the time ranges from a homemade sirloin burger, through fresh mussels in garlic white wine and cream, or field mushroom, black pudding, Parma ham and shavings of parmesan, to homemade chips and mayonnaise - something for everybody.
A handy wine list is kept lively by Weavers of Nottingham, well known and respected in the area. A plentiful range of beers, including Adnams, Peroni, Hoegaarden, Peetermans, Guinness and Stowford Press.
Their friendly and very clear Website is a reliable guide to changes and developments at this welcome addition to eating out in the Eastern Counties.

Your Reviews of Windmill, The
Benjamin Charlton-Smith (14 February 2007)
My wife and I decided to eat at this restaurant because the outside it looked modern, clean and inviting. We were greeted with warm friendly smile and asked if had booked, which we hadn’t, but our host advised us that they had a cancellation and could accommodate us, which was fortunate because the restaurant was full. We were then asked to walk round to the lounge and offered to sit in their comfy sofa in front of a blazing log wood fire to peruse the menu. My wife chose the scallops followed by the local pheasant where as I opted for the pigeon from the Belvoir estate and for my main Fillet Steak Rossini primarily because it was local and the supplier was listed on the menu. My wife commented on how excellent her scallops were and my fillet steak was like butter! The service I thought was first class along with our food. Our bill came to a total of £67.90 which included drinks, water and a bottle of red Bordeaux. I will definitely be making further visits, we may even stay in the cottage next door and make a weekend of it, as I noticed when we left. Jolly good county pub/restaurant with an excellent blend rustic/contemporary feel to it.

We have been visiting this pub for over three years. Prior to its recent refurbishment and since, we have always been made to feel welcome, whether we are dining for just the two of us, with a party, or even with our three dogs just for a drink after a long walk through the Vale of Belvoir woods. The food is always excellent, especially the combo Sunday lunch. The beer is well kept and they offer a good selection of wines at reasonable prices. We have three pubs in the village we live in. However, none of them match up to The Windmill, we only wish that it was in the village we lived in.
