Winter Garden, The Description

A striking black and white Victorian gent's res, now a family hotel serving pleasantly familiar food from a short four-course menu at a set price. Prices are reasonable and the service friendly if a trifle relaxed. The menu changes daily and has a reasonable choice of options on each course, with due attention paid to vegetarians. The Winter Garden Restaurant has extensive views into the surrounding countryside, itself one of the main factors in bringing people to this peaceful setting. House wine £8.75.

Fixed Dinner

  • £21.95 (3 courses) to £24.95 (4 courses)

Your Reviews of Winter Garden, The

The Happy Couple (22 August 2007)

Having stayed at this place many times before, we could not help but notice the change since the new owners have taken over. It was always sleepy hollow, but now its just plain stale.

Don't expect a drink after 10.30 p.m. the bar is shut! Peter and Marion Kaye ran this place with a far more jovial and light hearted feeling to it. The food has deteriorated, in both quality and quantity. It used to have 3 AA rosettes once upon a time, and could rightly be sold on the dining, in eighteen months.

However, that's gone down to just one! It barely deserves that. A shocking drop in standards we feel, yet still the same prices! Smaller portions, poorly cooked, no wonder its on the way out! The decor is still pretty ghastly, and the dining room experience was a perpetual tunnel of convenience over style, and you would be eating in a glorified corridor! Horrendous piped music, outdated menus. A time limit to get to the bar afterwards, should you fancy eating a later meal. Absolutely Awful. Early breakfasts, finish by 9.15 a.m. That's not a holiday, its torture, and the guests nearly all in bed by 10.30 p.m. (cuddled up with a bottle of their own as the bars shut so darn early). Send in Gordon Ramsay! It says on another review site. I couldn't agree more!
