Winter Glen, The

Tucked away disreetly just off the main stream of Edinburgh life, The Winter Glen maintains an air of reserve without being in any way snooty. Changing circumstances worldwide have brought about some perceptible loosening of the stays without any loss of dignity.

For instance it is downright encouraging to see a restaurant making a genuine effort to assist the young towards a better understanding of the advantages of decent eating, as they do here.

The cuisine relies heavily upon the best of Scottish ingredients deployed within traditional dishes, using oriental influences to ensure that they sit up and attract attention.

There is a tendency for dishes to be available in different sizes so that the traditional pattern of eating can be made more flexible, a welcome change in times when these patterns and consequently our daily lives are changing anyway.

Service has been known to be slightly sketchy - if you are going to educate the young only the best will do. Price of a two-course meal comes out at about £15. House wine is £14 per bottle and it would be good to feel that the educative process could take in a line or two on knowledge of wine.
