Woods Restaurant

9-13 Alfred Street, Bath, BA1 2QX

To dine at Woods is to indulge in the style that nearly thirty years of confidently supplying the culinary needs of those who understand and appreciate good food. David and Claude have owned this elegant restaurant since 1979, the place is full of horse racing pictures, one of David's passions. The kitchen is under the supervision of Stuart Ash and his very enthusiastic young team. Add to that excellent value for money with a polished, calm setting and you have Woods. It is perhaps best described as purveying warm nostalgia without a hint of pretentiousness. A starter of terrine of pork and black pudding served with macerated kumquats is well spoken of, or you might prefer the roasted tomato and basil soup.

A starter of terrine of pork and black pudding served with macerated kumquats is well spoken of, or you might prefer the roasted tomato and basil soup. Then you could contemplate a salad of char-grilled haloumi with spiced beetroot and grilled aubergine and confit of rabbit leg on a tomato, flageolet bean and chorizo cassoulet. To finish may be a brandy and apricot crème brûlée or a walnut and banana cake with crème anglaise and apple compote.

A wine list careful selected by David offers several by the glass and a good selection from Burgundy, his other great passion.

REVIEWS OF Woods Restaurant

Rgggr (10 July 2009)

Best described as 'old faithful' and thoroughly recommended. Good food, good service, good atmosphere. It's never going to push any culinary boundaries but neither will it fall from favour. It's like going to visit your aunt and uncle who own a French restaurant and serve and feed you the good hearty stuff rather than the pretentious superficial stuff. Warm, welcoming, familiar-feeling you can order any dish with confidence. Make sure you put your complete trust in David to select a bottle of wine for you. Not really for romance, but every other need is met comfortably. Sometimes however you may be next to a large party booking with the relevant social impedance wrought by those who consider group bookings a worthwhile use of resources.

Allan & Pauline (15 June 2009)

Four of us dined on Friday and it was lucky for us. It was a last minute booking and we could not have chosen better. The food, wine, and the excellent cheery service, made it well worth travelling from Bristol.
